B. Alexis’ “Black Barbie” & Letter to Self

Dear Brittany,

My heart breaks when I look at you because I know that you feel alone. That you are trying to find your place in life, trying to "fit in" because you never have. To find love because you never felt loved. To feel beautiful because you've never felt pretty. To find a voice because you've only known silence.

But, baby, I want you to know that there is a voice inside of you waiting to be heard, and there are people waiting to listen. You don't have to do it alone. Open yourself up to the world around you. Sure, there will be disappointments and hurts, but there will also be lasting joy and kinship that will develop from the relationships you build. The relationships you have now are no good for you. They have only left you confined to the small space of a box, but baby, your personality is too big for a box. You are not a ten inch barbie; you are a lifesize doll worthy of a grander display.

Stop limiting yourself by "looking for love" in all the wrong places and by giving yourself to all the wrong people. You are more than a people pleaser. You have the right to be pleased too. You are more than a still-life under scrutiny by spectators. You are life. You are more than just a sex object. You are a woman, a beautiful strong black woman gifted with supernatural powers by the god of the universe himself. Discover your worth, and then, live your worth. Stop living for others and start living for yourself. Get to know you, learn who you are. When you do this, you will become an indomitable force. You will dwell on the highest mountain and drink from the purest well in total bliss. Trust god to get you there. And when you get to that place, praise the woman you left behind for being the driving force behind the woman who you have become.

Love,
Self

BL received this letter from B. Alexis last week, after the release of the artist’s first single “Black Barbie” — which you can stream or download here.

B. Alexis wrote this in 2017, nine years in to her 30-year sentence. Not just any letter, this is a letter from the artist to herself; a sort of companion piece to “Black Barbie” which she wanted to share with her fans.

We’ve gotten stunning feedback from the song and video so far, and B. Alexis would like to extend a deep thank you to all her supporters!

"The song is amazing!! Tell her to keep up the great work. Her art is being appreciated."

"I’ll be praying for her!"

"The metaphor of it all… It's all so good and raw! Listening to it took me on a journey like if I were watching a documentary."

"I'm amazed...the quality is perfection."

♥️ Some quotes from supporters. ♥️
